Tips for Quitting Caffeine

Founded by Drs. Calvin and Agatha Thrash, Uchee Pines Institute encourages guests and others to live a clean and healthy life. Uchee Pines hosts residential lifestyle programs and publishes a number of counseling pamphlets on various health topics, including the breaking of caffeine habits.

Caffeine is an addictive compound. It belongs to the same chemical group as nicotine, morphine, and even cocaine. As a result, once one develops a dependence on coffee and other caffeinated beverages, it can be very hard to quit. The lack of caffeine’s stimulating effect makes many people feel drowsy, although professionals suggest that a massage with a stiff brush can wake up the senses more healthfully than a cup of coffee. Staying well hydrated also helps to keep the senses alert and to encourage the detoxification process.

Health experts suggest that a diet rich in nutrients and free of or low in other addictive substances, such as sugar and alcohol, supports the body’s ability to resist cravings. Replacing coffee with an alternative beverage, such as herbal tea, can also help to mitigate cravings and ease the mind of the person who is used to having a cup nearby. Deep breathing can soothe the headaches that often come with caffeine withdrawal, while exercise aids in improving mood and reducing irritability.
